I left school at 16 and worked as a time-served apprentice in printing, bookbinding & photography. The 1970’s was at the cusp of new technologies which superseded the original craft-based methods.
My first degree was in Fine Art: Sculpture, at Leicester Polytechnic. Here I had my first experience of working with molten glass direct from the furnace. I also acquired many transferable craft skills which I subsequently applied professionally in stone carving, mould-making & casting, ceramics, green wood-work & timber framing, building maintenance & restoration, including leading the design team for two Art Deco cinema restorations. As a co-founder of ‘Hand to Hand Arts’, an artist-led enterprise, I have been active in leading programmes in museum education (at the V&A and the Barbican Gallery), college, school and community settings. , Major influences on my working practice have been residencies at the Tengenenge Sculptors Community, Zimbabwe in 1992, and the Shiro Oni Studios, Japan in 2017.
